This is another test for 3D printing. I wanted to see how easily an older 3D model of mine that was not made specifically for 3D printing could be printed. It worked suprisingly well. I had to close some geometry on the model but that was all I needed to change. All else I had to do was export the model from Softimage to an STL format via Zbrush. The model was printed on an Objet printer as well. Once again I am really astounished how good 3D printers have become. This figure looks like it could have been hand sculpted.

wow man, that is awesome. ive always been interested with this 3d printing. how big is the file and how long does the printing take? i assume it comes out in more than 1 piece? Thanks.

Uups sorry the file is actually 112MB. I got confused with the 1.5 million polygons the 3D Model has.

The file is about 1.5MB. I did the printing through a company so I cannot give you the exact time it took. But I would guess about 24 hours. It came out as as a body with two separate pieces for the hand drills.

Thanks for the reply.

always beed intrigued with this process.

i am not familiar with other 3d software other than zbrush, so i hope the decimator plug-in should work fine, having millions and millions of polygons with the kind of things that i do. i saw a $2000 3d printer, im tempted to invest in one of those things; [link] , not sure if it does the same.

I think decimator should work fine. There are also extra programs for optimizing models for 3D print. This one is the cheapest I could find: [link]
Basically the $2000 3D printer does do the same. However you might not get all the details from your models with those "cheap" printers since their resolution is usually not that great.

Thanks man. I will look it up.

maybe its worth outsourcing it rather than buying the hardware.
